  • The 'Big Action' took place in October and caused Val to lose faith in humanity. The Nazi's, the SS and the local Lithuanian collaborators entered the Ghetto and randomly chose 10000 Jews, including seven members from the Ginsburg family, and executed them in the notorious execution place, not far from Kaunas.

  • The following Spring, another atrocity, called the 'Children's Action', took place. Orders came through from Germany stating that anyone who was not engaged in work should be eliminated. The young, the old, the sick, the disabled were forcibly removed and murdered in what Val described as a 'bloodbath'.

  • by the end of 1944 Kaunas jewish population was down to 12000 and the German army was in retreat. So the Germans ordered the jews into cattle wagons and sent them off to Germany as forced labourers. The Jews worked to build new underground factories for the production of brand new Messerschmid jet fighters.

  • After a three day journey, Val Arrived in Bavaria Germany, in the satellite camp of Dachau. There he was forced to do backbreaking work on starvation rations. Val himself said, " Life was very cheap, and you can't keep up terrible workloads with little or no food, so we lost most of the remaining Kaunas Jews in this concentration camp."
  • On the 1st of May 1945, the camp was liberated by the American armed forces. Unfortunately many Kauna's Jews died after liberation, despite all that the American doctors could do for them, because they could not digest food anymore.
  • After the war Val went to hospital for 6 months suffering from deep depression and it was there that he met his future wife (Ibi) who helped him to heal and brought him out of depression they then married and moved to England in 1948, quickly became British citizens and raised a family of two daughters.
