For good and healthy crop growth, crops need water, nutrients, air, soil, light, temperature and time. When there is an imbalance of these factors it impacts on the growth of the crop and the quality of what it produces.
The effects that El Nino is having on Australia and especially NSW include, reduced rainfall, warmer temperatures, shifts in temperature extremes, reduced tropical cyclone numbers, and increased fire dangers. The lack in rainfall across NSW has caused for crops, grass and land to dry out which with increased temperatures can lead to bushfires.
Currently in NSW the El Nino effect is causing a large scale drought across NSW. The El Nino effect is the sustainable warming of the water of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, causing movement of atmospheric circulation, pulling rain clouds away from Australia.
The El Nino effect Means that crops on farms dry out and struggle to grow, it also means that the animals have no grass to graze on leading them to become underweight and not worthy to be sold. This can be a major problem for big farms that sell produce to the shops that you get your food from. There is a lack in fresh food because the ground is not suitable for crop growth, because the farmers are not getting a sustainable income to purchase products for soil improvement.
A lack in fresh produce means that there is a strain on the produce of Australia which is sold in our supermarkets. Most customers are likely to buy fresh produce that is grown in Australia because they don't know how the crops are grown.
Drought effects small business and their income which has a flow on effect which effects their home life, with no crops they can't sell to consumers which leaves them with no income and no money to pay bills or buy staple foods, as well as no money to buy feed for livestock and existing crops.
Drought has a negative effect on many things including the food that we eat. drought is caused by a lack in rainfall due to climate change, and as this issue gets worse we have to work together to find sustainable solutions to maintain a healthy food production.
