Hanging out at the Dairy Queen, Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny are enjoying a hot fudge sundae and soda. What started as a light hearted conversation about Cherry turned serious when Johnny informed Dally that he and Ponyboy were going to turn themselves in.
Take it easy, kid. You're in an ambulance
As the T-bird roared up to the old church, Ponyboy exclaimed "the church is on fire." Before Dally could say anything, Johnny and I were out of the car and running towards the church.
You shouldn't be smoking
Realizing some children from a school picnic were missing, Johnny hastily ran into the burning church to save them. As pieces of the old roof came crashing down, a large piece of timber landed on Johnny.
Oh, Ponyboy, your hair...your tuff, tuff hair
Screaming sirens emanated from the ambulances as they raced down the road carrying Johnny and Ponyboy to the hospital. As Pony came to, his head was fuzzy and couldn't tell if the screaming was inside his head or not.
Sitting in the waiting room waiting to hear how Johnny and Dally were, I was ready to jump out of my skin. I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves. At that moment, Jerry Wood came back from his phone call and told me I shouldn't be smoking, but with great defiance, I continued to.
As I leaped up and ran to the door, Soda was already through it and wrapping me in a huge bear hug. As Soda pushed my hair back, I looked over and saw Darry standing quietly in the doorway, the silence was deafening. Before I knew it, we were all sobbing like babies. I realized at that moment that Darry really did care about me.
