A parent is teaching about the gifted options for her preteen and hoping she will choose the one that is a best fit.
Honey, I need to talk to you about school for next year. We both know your needs can be better met. There are several great options for you!
OK, mom. I have been bored and frustrated in class and do not feel challenged. What are they?
The first is a cluster classroom. You would be with a cluster of gifted children who absorb quickly and think like you.Your trained teacher would differentiate for you and you would be able to move quickly and think deeply while being in a mixed-ability classroom.
There is also a self-contained class where you would be in the same room all day diving deeper, being creative, thinking at high levels, and working on projects of interest across subjects all day.You would be with like minded students who are at your intellectual level as well as your social-emotional level, being your age. I think you'd really fit in and find your "tribe"!
Last there is acceleration. This can look like many things. At your age this could be grade skipping, subject acceleration, AP courses, mentorship, curriculum compacting, or even early admission to college. Since you are mature for your age, these could be good as well.
Sweetie, I just know you so well, and I know you need more! You are my independent learner who needs rich learning tasks and experiences. I'd really like you to think on this for a bit, and we'll talk more about which program is the best fit for you. Luckily, you have many choices!
This is a lot to consider Mom, and you sure do know a lot about gifted education! I do agree that I need a different placement. I want do want deep questions, challenging products and curriculum. We'll for sure talk more tonight Mom. I know one of these will be a good fit.
