The theses were a protest against the pope’s sale of indulgences. These allowed the buyer to be cleared of guilt for his or her sins without having to go through the normal self-punishments.
Henry dissolved England’s Catholic religious orders and seized their wealth. He also worked to place the Bible in the hands of the people.
The Reformation and Counter-Reformation did not only lead to religious changes. They also led to deep and lasting political shifts.
There were years of bloody wars between Catholics and Protestants. The Thirty Years’ War alone may have cost Germany 40 percent of its population.
