Ben Button was born an old man . "Wrapped in a voluminous white blanket, and partly crammed into one of the cribs, there sat an old man apparently about seventy years of age."
Benjamin's father tried desperately to suppress the truth, that his son was born old. Ben's father would force him to look and act as a child.
Ben was never truly accepted and embraced for his differences from the rest of the community.

When the war began peoples attention were on other things.
As Benjamin got older his appearance became younger. At 18 years of age Ben resembled a 50 year old man. This is when he met his love and gets married.

It was hard for people to exept the marriage because of the apparent age gap
