  • whenever it fell upon me, my blood rancold. I have to killhim! for my ownsake!

  • This is when the narrator is beginning the storyabout how he murdered an old man. He is prisonbecause he was found guilty. This is him telling hisstory.
  • SHREIK!!!
  • One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture-a pale blue eye with a film over it. I made up my mind to take thelife of the old man and thus rid myself of the eyeforever.
  • where is myneighbour?!
  • we have had anenquiry that the old man was hurt lastnight... do you know what happened?
  • Every night, just at midnight but I found the eyealways closed; and so it was impossible to do thework.
  • *sigh* Howeverhis heart began tobeat, and it gotlouder until I hadto admit by deed.
  • This however, did not vex me; it would not be heardthrough the wall. At length it ceased. The old man was dead.
  • A shriek had been heard by a neighbour during thenight; suspicion of foul play had been aroused andthe police were called. I smiled- for what was I tofear?
  • "Villain's" I shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed! -tear up the planks!-here, here!-it is thebeating of his hideous heart!"
