Storyboard Text

  • I am Abraham Lincoln
  • The Election of 1860
  • I, John Bell of Tennesee, believe that we don't need to address the slavery issue!
  • Let the people vote for slavery or against!
  • Candidate, Abraham Lincoln, wanted to abolish slavery in territories but contain slavery where it already existed.
  • I support federal slave code in territories
  • He went up against John Bell, who wanted to avoid the slavery issue (which is probably why he didn't win) and keep the country united.
  • I am the 16th president of the United States.
  • Another candidate, Stephen Douglas, didn't approve of slavery in territories and supported popular sovereignty (letting the people vote).
  • Lastly,  John Breckinridge  supported federal slave code in territories and supported popular sovereignty as well.
  • Although Lincoln wasn't on the ballot in the South, there were so many people part of the Electoral College in the North that he still won the election.
  • It started even more issues with the South because they thought he would abolish slavery for good. This was one of the main causes of the Civil War.
