  • Tom is married to Daisy and he truly does love her. But at the same time, he is having an affair with Myrtle.
  • Conflict
  • In the end, Nick is disgusted and sees the true colors of the people of West Egg. Not only because of their behaviors, but also because nobody shows up to Gatsby's funeral.
  • Symbolism
  • An example of theme in the story would be that only fools fall in love. In the story Gatsby is the greatest fool because he can't see past his dream of being with Daisy to realize that she is no good for him.
  • Gatsby, who has obtained a vast fortune, tries his hardest to win the heart of Daisy after almost 5 years of not seeing each other. But his mysterious past and her current relationship is keeping her from accepting him.
  • The green light on the end of Daisy's doc is a very important example of symbolism. It represents Gatsby's hopes and dreams for the future. In the novel, Gatsby is seen reaching out toward the light as a guide leading him to his goal of being with Daisy.
