Odysseus takes several of his best fighters to go to the cyclops' (Polyphemus) cave and he tells the rest of his crew to look after the ship. They bring some bottles of brandy.
"Stand by and keep watch over the ship, (135).
Aye aye, captain!
While the cyclops is gone, Odysseus and some of his men enter the cyclops' cave and find all of his belongings. The crew wants to steal it, but Odysseus said no because he wanted to see what he had to offer.
Though that is enticing, no.
"Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it" (167-168).
The cyclops finds Odysseus and his men in his cave and interrogates them. Odysseus answers in fear.
We are Achaeans lost since after the war and we want your stuff.
"Strangers, who are you? And where from? What brings you here by seaways-a fair traffic?" (197-198).
The cyclops picks up two of Odysseus' men and eats them. Odysseus and the rest of his crew are shocked and scared.
Odysseus and his men are mad and want revenge on the cyclops. They decide to get the cyclops drunk so that they will have an opportunity to take action and make it out of the cave.
Let's kill this guy!
"If I [kill] him, we [perish here] as well" (248-249). I have a better plan. Let's get the big guy drunk.
