  • President John Adams wanted peace between France and the US, so he sent Charles Pinckney, Elbridge Gerry, and John Marshall to induce peace with France, but they were unsuccessful.
  • No.
  • May we talk to the minister?
  • Three French agents, commonly referred to as X, Y, and Z had proposed a deal, in which the American were unhappy.
  • We're gonna tell on you
  • If you pay, you can see the minister
  • After the three men told the president what had happened, John Adams did not approve of what X, Y, and Z had done. He proceeded to cut off connections to France in 1798.
  • This behavior is unacceptable!
  • The Democratic-Republicans were critical of what John Adams had done, and proudly expressed it.
  • You are a disgrace
  • Democratic-Republicans were angered and wrote newspapers to express how they felt. Adams blamed them for bringing new immigrants to America, bringing the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798.

  • Oh well! I'm the president.
  • Thomas Jefferson and James Madison argued that the act was unconstitutional, so John Adams came to a compromise.
