- Prologue
- Listen, Ismene: Creon buried our brother Eteocles, but Polyneices, …They say that Creon has sworn no one shall bury him, no one mourn for him.
- Scene I
- But now at last our new King is coming: Creon of Thebes, Menoikeus’ son.
- Scene II
- And then we looked, and there was Antigone! ...when this girl Found the bare corpse, and all her love’s work wasted, She wept, and cried…And then she brought more dust And sprinkled wine three times for her brother’s ghost.
- The story begins with Antigone telling her sister, Ismene, of what their uncle and the new king of Thebes, Creon, has done about the burial of their brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices. Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, but Ismene doesn't want to go with her. (Found at lines 14-20)
- Scene III
- Your temper terrifies them—everyone Will tell you only what you like to hear. But I, at any rate, can listen; and I have heard them Muttering and whispering in the dark about this girl. They say no woman has ever, so unreasonably, Died so shameful a death for a generous act.
- Creon is now the new king. He accepts the throne and talks about what he wants to be as a ruler. Later, a sentry enters the chamber to report to Creon that someone has buried the body. (Lines 128-129)
- Scene IV
- Soon I shall be with my own again… And I shall see my father again, and you, mother, And dearest Polyneices... And my reward is death before my time!... I have not sinned before God. Or if I have, I shall know the truth in death. But if the guilt Lies upon Creon who judged me, then, I pray, May his punishment equal my own.
- The sentry arrested Antigone, after he and a few other sentries found her with Polyneices, and is reporting back to Creon. Antigone admits to the crime. Creon then explains her punishment. Ismene is arrested as well. (Lines 334-343)
- Scene V
- I tell you, Creon, you yourself have brought This new calamity upon us. Our hearths and altars Are stained with the corruption of dogs and and carrion birds That glut themselves on the corpse of Oedipus’ son.
- Haimon, Creon's son and Antigone's fiancé, meets with his father to talk to him about Antigone's punishment. He explains the people's view on everything. (Lines 550-555)
- Creon changes his mind about Antigone's punishment, she's now about to be locked in a tomb. Antigone then accepts her punishment with open arms. The scene ends with her walking towards her fate. (Lines 715-726)
- Teiresias, the prophet, is telling Creon of a vision he had. He tells Creon that the Gods are unhappy of the choices that he has recently made and if he wishes to please them he has to undo his actions. (Lines 796-799)
