  • An estimated 56.7 million people in the United States, or 19%-20% of the population have a disability. The Paralympics is the second-largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games. Before the Paralympics began, athletes with physical disabilities competed in the Olympics. Ray Ewry won eight gold medals in the 1900, 1904, and 1908 Olympics while having polio. Staying active while living with a disability can help you strengthen your heart, build strong muscles and bones, improve coordination, and make you feel good about yourself.
