This story takes place in Chinatown, San Francisco, Califorina in the mid 1900s on Waverley place where the the Jong family lives.
Vincent, Waverly's, brother got her a chess board for Christmas in a Chinese Baptist church.
Vincent lets his younger play chess with him because whoever wins gets Waverly's lifesavers. She starts reading the instructional books and begins playing with other men in the neighborhood. Her ability in chess improves and she stops playing with the locals and begins playing in tournaments.
Waverly confronts her mother in the market, saying that she dislikes how she is using her and gives herself the right to do things she wants to do.
Waverly returns home and is ignored by her family with was the mothers command
Waverly goes to her room and thinks about her mother's power and whether she's going to give up chess.
