  • "I'm going to take my troops to attack the North on their territory so we can break their will to fight."
  • Attack the Union immediately!
  • "We surrender Little Round Top!"
  • Robert E. Lee was a general for the Confederate army decided it was time to take the war to North's territory.
  • "We shall attack the center of the Union on top of Cemetery Ridge!"
  • July 1st, 1863 the Confederate army attacked the Union in a small town, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  The first day, Lee ordered general Ewell to attack immediately but he hesitated and gave the Union time to establish a good defensive position.
  • July 2nd, the second day of the battle of Gettysburg started. It was essential to gain control of Little Round Top which was the smaller of two hills. The Union was able to make the Confederates surrender Little Round Top. The fighting went until nightfall.
  • "Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
  • July 3rd 1863, was the third day of the Gettysburg battle. Confederates shot cannons for an hour and general George Pickett took 15,000 men to march up Cemetery Ridge.
  • More than 51,000 soldiers were killed, captured, wounded, or went missing in this three day battle. The battle of Gettysburg was a turning point for the Union. And for the South, the attempt of cotton diplomacy failed because they lost the battle.
  • At the end of the battle, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address speech at the Cemetery on Cemetery Ridge. This included graves of all the soldiers that died. He addressed the loss of soldiers and how the Union is ready to win the Civil War.
