Ceyx and Alcyone were faithful lovers who never wanted to spend time apart.
Ceyx needed to sail across the sea to visit an oracle. Alcyone wanted to go with him because she had heard of the terrible shipwrecks that often happened out at sea and she wanted to be with him. However, he told her to stay home.
Alcyone watched as her lover, Ceyx, sailed away. She watched until his ship was no longer visible.
A tremendous hurricane struck Ceyx's ship that night and it capsized. Right before Ceyx was lost to the sea, he said his lover's name and was happy because he knew she was safe.
Each day, Alcyone prayed to Hera to bring Ceyx back. Hera decided to tell Alcyone through her dreams about Ceyx's death. That night, Alcyone dreamed of Ceyx's death, and in the morning she saw his dead body float in from the sea.
The gods felt bad for Ceyx, so they turned her into a bird and reincarnated Ceyx as a bird as well. The lovers were often seen flying through the sky together or even gliding over waves in the sea.
