The long-lasting friendship of Charlie, Patrick, and Sam started here, at a football game. When Patrick noticed Charlie near him, he introduced himself and Sam to Charlie. When Patrick said that Sam was his step-sister, Charlie was a bit happy because he thought that Sam quite pretty. It was at that point Charlie's crush on Sam began.
Charlie was with Patrick and Sam when he went to his first high school party. At the party, he was introduced to Patrick and Sam's friends which later became his friends too. For Christmas, he received a typewriter from the siblings. This gift made him feel wanted more than ever since his aunt Helen died.
As Chalie wrote so much about aunt Helen and made her seem like she was still alive. He finally opened up about her death, and how he thought it was his fault for being born that day. She died in a car crash getting him a present for his birthday. All he could think about was if she were to get him only one present or go on a day where the roads weren't icy.
When Charlie was dropped off at home by Mary Beth he headed down to the basement. When he entered he saw his sister on the couch crying, but a "different kind of crying"(page 116). After arguing with Charlie, he started to walk away until she hugged him then told him that she was pregnant. She was scared because of her age and that her boyfriend said it wasn't his.
Charlie has been lonely and sad because of the game Truth or Dare at the party. So instead of talking it out to somebody, he goes to Bob to get some marijuana. Marijuana has been his cope ever since he tried it in the brownies. From that visit, he has learned a couple of smoking tricks from Bob.
A while later, seniors were graduating. Charlie was sad because his only friends were Sam and Patrick. Not only were his friends graduating, his sister was too. After graduation, when Charlie headed over to Sam's house she forgave him, which made him incredibly happy, but he was still sad she was leaving.
