  • I'd rather be dead in Yomi than watch over the oceans!
  • I'd rather be dead in Yomi than watch over the oceans!
  • When Izanagi was washing off the rot of Yomi in a stream, he wiped his right eye and Amaterasu, the sun goddess was born. From his left eye, came Tsuki-Yomi, the moon god and from his nose, Susanowa, the storm god. Izanagi put them in charge of the world. Amaterasu was given command of the high plains of Heaven, Tsuki-Yomi was given rule of the night, and Susanowa was given control of the oceans.
  • When Susanowa heard this, he yelled and wept, saying he did not want to rule over the oceans and would rather be in Yomi. Izanagi was so angry at this that he banished Susanowa from his universe. Instead of leaving, Susanowa first went to Heaven, claiming he wanted to say goodbye to his sister.
  •  Fearing Susanowa was coming to challenge her, she waited armed. But when Susanowa got there, he simply proposed a contest. The rules were that whoever could make the most gods or goddesses would prove to be the mightiest. Amaterasu agreed!
  •  Asking for her brother's sword, Amaterasu broke into three pieces, chewed them up, and spit out three goddesses. Susanowa asked for his sister's necklace and spit it up into five gods and claimed himself the winner. But Amaterasu claimed she was the winner, because the gods Susanowa made came from her possession. Susanowa refused to accept this.
  • To celebrate his win, Susanowa trampled rice paddies and blocked irrigation ditches.
  • Then, he skinned a pony and threw it into the weaving hall, where Amaterasu was weaving clothes for the gods and goddesses with her maidens. Amaterasu was so scared that she ran into a cave and rolled a big boulder across the entrance.
