Storyboard Text

  • Hello my name is John Lewis, I am a American Politician and a former civil rights leader. I was also a chairman for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
  • As the chairman of the SNCC, I had written a speech to the Civil Rights bill in 1963. But I denounced the bill because it didn't protect African Americans against police brutality and or the right to vote.
  • I accepted an award for a book I wrote and spoke about its significance. When the award was given to me I said "I remember in 1956, when I was 16 years old, going to the public library to get library cards, and we were told the library was for whites only and not for coloreds. And to come here and receive this honor, it’s too much.”
