  • Napolean! There has been a slave revolt in Saint Domingue!
  • France, 1802
  • We don't have the money for troops.
  • We must raise the money or we will lose the colony entirely! Is there not a way?
  • Well, we are in the middle of negotiations with an American minister...
  • Whatever you say, President Jefferson.
  • The United States, also 1802
  • After France took back the Louisiana territory, I sent Livingston to France to negotiate the selling of New Orleans to us. Our treaty with the Spanish to store goods in New Orleans has been revoked under French orders. I need you, Monroe, to join him in France and aid him.
  • Monsieur Livingston, perhaps, on the behalf of the United States, you will be willing to negotiate for not only New Orleans but all of the Louisiana Territory?
  • France, again, 1802
  • The entire territory?
  • Oui, from the Mississipi River to the Rocky Mountains, for only three cents an acre.
  • Are we sure this is legal? Some people think this is not constitutional.
  • The United States, again, 1802
  • The Louisiana Purchase Louisiana Territory 3¢ an acre $15 million Mississippi River to Rocky Mountains x________________
  • You are able to negotiate treaties aren't you?
  • The Louisiana Purchase
  • Of course I am! So, tell me the best parts of the territory!
  • Who's telling him he just doubled the size of the country with mostly unexplored flat land and swamps?
