  • The United States had won the war against Mexico. Gaining the territories of California and Texas.
  • This brought on disputes on whether or not the new territories would allow slavery.
  • Purpose was to prohibit slavery in the territories acquired from the Mexican-American War. Passed in the house, but failed to pass in the Senate.
  • Wilmot Proviso
  • Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to seek compromise between the North and South. As part of the Compromise, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished.

  • Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which let the states choose to have slavery or not. This act violated the Missouri compromise which kept the Union from falling apart.
