  • John loved his chickens and many times would go and talk to his chickens as if they were his church members and he is the preacher.  This forshadows the life of John Lewis as he later becomes a successful speaker for the Civil Rights Movement.

  • John Lewis visits the North with his Uncle and Aunt where he experiments for the first time how white and blacks live together without friction. This shows Lewis that there is a possibility for equality where he lives as well as in the North.

  • John Lewis meets with Dr. King who is the Civil Rights leader at the time.  This is empowering to John because King inspires Lewis to become apart of the movement by doing something that could help the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Jim Lawson is speaking to John Lewis and others about the importance of nonviolence. Lawson was able to use rhetoric to help empower the youth of the black communities by showing how to deal with racism and counter that with peace. 
  • During the peaceful protest, the police lock up the protesters because of racist views. One sees that the jailed protesters understand the power of words by singing a hymn that gives them strength to overcome the struggles in the fight for equality.

  • Dr. King, on May 10, 1960, speaks to Nashville about his reasons for coming there which is to bring about peace and equality for all. King knows the power of words and how they affect the hearts and minds of the nation.
