  • In 1858, the Illinois Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Senate.
  • Douglas Fights Back!
  • There could be war!!!
  • In each debate, Lincoln discussed that the central problem of the campaign was the spread of slavery in the west. He accused the Democrats of trying to spread slavery across the United States.
  • Douglas is Victorious!
  • VICTORY IS MINE!
  • Lincoln said that African Americans were entitled to all the rights listed in the Declaration of Independence, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • You think that the Negro's your brother?
  • Douglas called out Lincoln for saying that the country can't remain half slave and half free. He said that making every state a free one would only lead to war.
  • Overall, after all seven debates, Stephen Douglas has won the place of Senator of Illinois. Though not victorious, Lincoln gained enough popularity that helped him win the presidential election two years later.
