Storyboard Text

  • I'm Eilis, and yes, I'm afraid I'll be deported.
  • You'll be fine, darling. Just stay focused when you go through the examinations. Avoid coughing or sneezing. I promise it'll all be worth it when you make it through those doors.
  • You look nervous. My name is Eliza. This must be your first time to America.
  • Welcome to Ellis Island, young lady. What is your name, and are you joining family here in America?
  • My name is Eilis Ronan, and I am joining my aunt at her boarding house.
  • Eilis walks around town during her first week in the U.S.
  • It's going to be rough getting used to this stench. It's all over the city.
  • And there are so many fires in America! It's too overcrowded here.
  • Paulo's Bakery
  • I cannot believe how many young children are put to work.
  • After a week, Eilis has a conversation with her aunt.
  • Thank you for helping your fellow boarders this past week, but it's time to find a job.
  • And you can, but you'll need to pay for the night classes I'm enrolling you in.
  • But I was so excited to learn in America!
  • At her work...
  • This job isn't terrible, but the hours are so long. One day, I'll leave this factory.
  • I want to open my own bakery.
  • Well, what do you want to do?
  • Weeks pass when she meets Paulo Jr.
  • That beauty over there proves that America truly is wonderful. This is the beginning of my new life.
