Bruno is 9 years old and he is the main character that has an emotional roller coaster through out the book. His father has to be relocated to Poland to become a commandant. Bruno likes to explore so he does that at his new house and finds a young boy on the other side of the fence that separates the Jews from the Others. He eventually becomes best friends with him and doesn’t want to move back to Germany.
He is in the forbidden office.
Gretel is 12 years old and her brother is Bruno. She likes to play with dolls and always wears her hair in 2 pigtail braids. Gretel eventually develops a crush on teenage Lieutenant Kotler. She has 3 best friends and they all like to torture Bruno about his size, but has to leave them behind in Germany. Towards the end of the book, she becomes more mature for her age.
He looks different from Bruno because he is from Poland.
Lieutenant Kotler is a teenager and works with/for Bruno’s father. He is mean to the kids but tries to be nice to make a good impression so that he might get a promotion. He becomes really close to Bruno’s mother and starts planning parties with her. Lieutenant Kotler treats the Jews very badly and acts like he is the boss around the house whenever the father isn’t there. The Commandant decides to restation him outside of Poland.
He is bald because of the spread of lice in the camp.
He is in the kitchen because he peel the vegetables.
Ralf is a father to Bruno and Gretel as well as a husband to Mother. He was promoted the Commandant making his family move from Germany to Poland. In Poland, he runs the concentration camp that Bruno can see from his window. Whenever he is home, he will be in the FORBIDDEN WITH NO EXCEPTION office where he has his “conversations” with Mother.
He has blonde hair because he is from Germany.

Shmuel is the boy that Bruno finds on the other side of the fence while exploring. He is also 9 years old and was born on the same day as Bruno, April 15, 1934. Shmuel is a Jew while Bruno is an Other. He is a thinner version Bruno with a shaved head. His father and grandfather eventually go missing. Shmuel invites Bruno to play with him on his side of the fence and from that day on, Bruno went missing. At least they both died next to their best friend.
He is wearing blue striped pajamas.

Pavel is a waiter for the family. He will peel the vegetables and then serve dinner. He is also like Shmuel, shaved head and a Jew. He wears a white coat because he used to be a doctor before the Holocaust. When Bruno decides to build a tire swing, he gets hurt. Pavel is the only one home and heals Bruno’s wound using his doctoral methods. Mother will tell Father that she cleaned Bruno up so that Pavel doesn’t get in trouble for touching/talking to Others.
He isn't happy because of Lieutenant Kotler.
He is wearing a white jacket since he was formerly a doctor.
