  • Gatsby versus Nature (time)
  • Gatsby as he reaches for the unattainable. He is reaching back towards the green light which in the novel symbolizes the past. All Gatsby wants to obtain is his past perfect relationship with Daisy. He thinks he can turn back time and do so, but nature is powerful.
  • All I want is you Daisy! We can beat time and stay eternally together in the past. We can turn back is possible.
  • Tom and Gatsby continually fight for Daisy's affection throughout the novel. Daisy finally admitted her betrayal: that she had loved Tom and also had Gatbsy. This shows Gatsby he can never recover the past.
  • I loved Tom, but I loved you too Gatsby!
  • Do you hear that Gatsby, you are wrong! You are poor and always will be.
  • Daisy what changed? We were supposed to be happy together, forever.

  • Myrtle has turmoil with society because she believed when she married George Wilson that he a worthy husband and that her life would be swell. She soon came to realize her life with him was nothing compared to what she had dreamed. She has inner turmoil because of this. Also she combats with society when she is clawing her way to the top of the pyramid and attempting to overcome barriers.
