Storyboard Text

  •        Chapter 7: Samsara             "He rose, said farewell to the mango tree and the pleasure garden... He smiled wearily, shook his head and said good-bye to these things." (84)
  •        Chapter 8: By the River            "Siddhartha raised himself and saw a monk in a yellow gown, with shaved head... He looked at the man, he recognized [this monk was] Govinda, the friend of his youth, Govinda who had taken refuge in the Illustrious Buddha.. Siddhartha saw that Govinda did not recognize him." (91)
  •          Chapter 9: The Ferryman            "'You have suffered, Siddhartha, yet I see that sadness has not entered your heart.' 'No, my dear friend. Why should I be sad? My son has been given to me.' 'I also welcome your son. But now, Siddhartha, let us go to work, there is much to be done.'" (115)
  •                Chapter 10: The Son                    "...Tell me, my friend, are you educating your son? Is he obedient to you? Do you strike him or punish him?' 'No...' 'I knew it.  You are not strict with him... you know that gentleness is stronger than severity... But is it not perhaps a mistake on your part not to be strict with him, not to punish him?'" (119-120)
  • Chapter 11: Om "From that our Siddhartha ceased to fight against destiny. There shone in his face the serenity of knowledge, of one who is no longer confronted with conflict of desires, who has found salvation, who is in harmony with the stream of events, with the stream of life, full of sympathy and compassion, surrendering himself to the stream, belonging to the unity of all things." (136)
  • Chapter 12: Govinda "Govinda bowed low. Incontrollable tears trickled down his old face. He was overwhelmed by a feeling of great love of the most humble veneration. He bowed low, right down to the ground, in front of the man sitting there motionless, whose smile reminded him of everything that he had ever loved in his life, everything that had ever been of value and holy in his life." (152)
