One day, on his way home, he sees an elderly couple getting evicted and an angry group gathering around. He decides to act on this, getting up and making a speech that incited them to forcibly move the couple back in.
He leaves shortly after, but realizes on his way home that he needs the money and joins.
I'm Brother John. You're speech was amazing. My group, the Brotherhood, needs more speakers like you.
He begins working in Harlem for the Brotherhood to fight for equality of the races. A fellow Brother, Clifton, disappeared and the narrator finds him in the midst of an altercation with a cop on the street.
You're kicked out of this college. I'm sending you up North for work instead.
He arrives in Harlem, determined to get a job and impress the president of his college, Dr. Bledsoe, so he is allowed to come back.
On his first day at the paint factory, something goes wrong in the boiler room and the narrator passes out. After he wakes up, he is fired.
