Baby Coyotito chuckles causing the scorpion to attack him. He endures severe bites. Juana and Kino attempt to remove the poison by sucking on his bites, but it is no use. He needs to see a doctor. Juana disagrees at first because she knows that the family will be turned away. But, the doctor is the only one who can help Coyotito heal.
After traveling from the village to the town, the family arrives at the doctor. When asked by the doctor's servant if they had money, Kino offers the doctor eight small pearls. The servant turns the family away because they are too poor.
Full of anger and worry, Kino and Juana go out in the water in their boat to pearl dive. Kino especially treasures his canoe because it has been passed down through his family and will always aid Kino in providing for his family. They are searching for a larger pearl to pay for the doctor services for Coyotito.
After searching long and hard, Kino and Juana stumble upon the largest pearl they have ever seen! Kino jumps with joy but Juana hides her excitement out of superstition that someone may take it away. Kino screams of joy, attracting the other nearby boats.
Word spread through the town and village that Kino and Juana found the "Pearl of the World" almost instantly. Everyone begins dreaming of what they would do with the pearl if they had it. Soon everyone would grow envious of Juana and Kino and eventually want to steal the pearl.
They have the pearl?
Pearl the World?
Kino and Juana?
Kino decides to dig a hole inside the hut so that no one will be able to find or steal the sacred pearl, since the whole town has already learned their news. The neighbors of Kino and Juana have been frequently visiting to hear about the pearl and to check on Coyotito so they believe it is safe to hide it.
