  • Literary Device: Conflict
  • Feuding Families
  • Tybalt and Romeo
  • Mercutio!
  • The literary device, "conflict', is when there's a problem faced between the characters. This usually takes place between opposing characters and is often the climax of the story.
  • Juliet and Lord Capulet
  • You ungrateful girl! You will marry Paris!
  • The Capulets and the Montagues were opposing families. They created many conflicts and brought chaos to the city of Verona. However, Romeo and Juliet believed their love could end the feud.
  • Age vs. Youth
  • Maybe you shouldn't be with Romeo and marry Paris.
  • From the beginning, there was tension between Tybalt and Romeo. This caused the boys to cause many conflicts. They fought after Tybalt killed Mercutio. Because of Tybalt's actions, Romeo caused even more problems and murdered Tybalt.
  • Fate
  • I must deliver this to Romeo in Mantua
  • Lord Capulet and Juliet had a few conflicts. For example, when Juliet told her family that she had to deny her father's request on marrying Paris, Lord Capulet became furious. This conflict occurred as Lord Capulet attacked his daughter, wife, and the Nurse.
  • Conflict relates to the central theme: Age vs, Youth. Youth is usually ignorant and naive which causes them to go against what the aged and the experienced say. The disobedience causes conflicts such as arguments. For example, the Nurse and Juliet had an argument over who Juliet should marry.
  • How dare you say that! Romeo is my one true love!
  • Conflicts that happen during the play, also relate to fate. Many of the characters tried to go against fate which caused a lot of the conflicts. For example, the letter that Friar tried to send to Romeo, did not arrive in time. This conflict was a result of fate and caused his demise.9-
  • I can't believe Juliet is dead...I must join her in death.
