Alexander Hamilton proposed a way to help with the economic problems. First, pay off all war debts, raise government revenues, and create a national bank. Thomas Jefferson, however, was against a national bank, opposed tariffs, and favored agriculture.
Farmers protested against the government's tax on Whisky, which was valuable to the livelihood of backcountry farmers.
Hamilton wanted to stay with Britain because the trade with them was so important but Jefferson wanted to side with the French an attack on liberty everywhere. However, the president decided that we would not side with one country or the other.
