  • Revolution of 1911
  • I am Sun Yat Sen and I want to unify China under a republic! So I will join with the warlords in the south to defeat the north!
  • May 4th Movement of 1919

  • After the Opium war, Sun Yat Sen wanted to unify China under a republic but, Yuan Shikai was named president and tries to become an emperor. After he died China was split into 2 camps: warlords in Beijing in the north and Sun Yat Sen + the warlords in the south.
  • The Long March
  • This movement was a revolt led by students who were mad about the governments weak response to the treaty of Versailles. It was fueled by Nationalist and Communist ideas.
  • Japanese Invasion
  • Nationalists and communists capture Beijing and end warlord rule. Nationalist leader Chiang Kai Shek killed thousands of communists. Mao becomes the leader of the communists but the nationalists defeat the communists in battle

  • Communist
  • Mao led his communist followers to rebuild communism in a safe area outside nationalist control so they marched 6,000 miles into the mountains to hide.
  • Japan invaded China which brought a halt to the civil war. They agreed that it would be better to fight Japan together. Nationalists army was weakened but communists grew.
