The Knight's Tale
Palamon and Arcite are sent to prison after returning from war by Theseus condemning them to perpetual imprisonment. "Two pale young knights there... Arcita was the name of one, That of the other knight was Palamon... Theseus'... decreed they should at once be sent To Athens, and gave order they should be kept Perpetual prisoners" (Chaucer)
Palamon and Arcite see Emily, Ypolita's younger sister, and both men immediately want to marry her. They argue over who should win despite both being in prison.
She's so lovely! I want to marry her!
Palamon escapes prison with the help of a friend, while Arcite is so angry and ravaged by love that he is unrecognizable and escapes with the help of a friend on the condition that Arcite never goes to Athens.
The two men happen to meet in the forest when Palamon hears Arcite moaning for Emily's love in the forest. They engage in a deadly battle, when Theseus finds them and sets a date for a great tournament to see who should marry Emily.
Palaman prays to Venus to marry Emily, while Arcite prays to Mar to win the great tournament.
I pray to Venus that I can marry Emily.
I pray to Mars that I can win the tournament.
