  • Helena: A young woman from Athens who loves Demetrius even though he rejected her. She is undettered by the fact that Demetrius doesn't love her anymore, and puts herself in dangerous and humiliating positions like running through the woods after Demetrius even though he wants nothing to do with her.

He wishes to impose the death penalty if she doesn't marry Demetrius. Theseus, however, reduces the penalty from death to life as a nun.
  • The conflict that this character creates is probably the one that drives the plot of the Athenian lovers because when he orders Hermia to marry Demetrius or die, he is forcing her to take one of the riskier alternatives: Hermia and Lysander running away to get married with Demetrius hot on their heels to stop them.
  • "Stand forth Demetrius.-My noble lord, this man hath my consent to marry her.-Stand forth Lysander.-And my gracious duke, this man hath bewitched the bosom of my child."
