Hello everyone! I am here at the Fords Theater, where President Lincoln was shot yesterday. The big question is what is going to happen when Andrew Johnson takes over? The funny thing is that Lincoln was a Republican and Johnson is a democrat. I will keep you all up to date!
It is late April and Johnson has taken office. He has decided to keep Lincoln's cabinet. Then Congress starts to oppose him. We think that he kept the cabinet to please the South.
As we know Congress is not in session. I am now inside where President Johnson issues the Proclamation of Amnesty. This proclamation is for the reconstruction. As we can all tell he is in charge.
President Johnson is giving a speech. By the way Happy Birthday George Washington! He is giving this speech and bashing the Congress because they vetoed his bill about funding Freedman's Bureau. He is calling them out by name telling the people that they are "dis-unionists."
Hello everyone! Congress now has the right to override the President's vetoes. The Congress creates a reconstruction plan and Johnson vetoes it but then it is overridden by Congress. The Congress can do what they want but things are not happening. Then they overrode Johnson's veto on the Tenure of Office Act. This requires approval from the senate before he could get rid of government officials.
Johnson suspends Secretary of War, temporarily, when Congress is out of session. Johnson replaces him with General Ulysses S. Grant. When Congress returns they vote and the Senate does not agree with removing the Secretary of War. Johnson goes against the Senate and gives the Secretary of War a formal dismissal. Then he he has impeachment charges filed against him for going against the Tenure of Office Act. He is the first president to have an impeachment trial. Johnson is found guilty but remains in office. The Senate cannot convict Johnson of impeachment by 1 vote. Johnson was them freed from the charges of impeachment.
