  • We should end slavery and women deserve better rights!

  • The Spirit of Reform
  • Prison Reform
  • Sojourner Truth gave speeches throughout the North against slavery. She wanted women to also have better rights. She thinks women should be able to get an education.
  • Education Reform
  • Preachers are at a religious meeting proclaiming that people could earn their salvation by doing hard work. They did this so they could encourage people to work and improve society.
  • The Movement to End Slavery
  • Dorothea Dix wanted to improve conditions for prisoners and the mentally ill. She wanted mentally ill people to stop being punished and make mentally ill hospitals. She also wanted them to get rid of deptors.
  • Equal Rights for Women
  • The public education was led by Horace Mann. Most children did not attend school, but those who did had overcrowded classrooms and poorly trained teachers.
  • William Garrison published a newspaper called The Liberator in the 1830s. His newspaper was not only about ending slavery but was also about equality for African Americans.
  • During the mid-1800s, many women began to work to change the way women were viewed. Women would have to work together to make a difference.
