Storyboard Text

  • “Nwoye turned around to walk into the inner compound when his father, suddenly overcome with fury, sprang to his feet and gripped him by the neck.”
  • “Perhaps he was not his son. No! He could not be. His wife had played him false. He would teach her!”
  • This reveals how the fear that Okonkwo had that Nwoye would abandon the clan and convert to christianity, lead Okonkwo to become furious and choke his son.
  • Okonkwo choking his son demonstrates how his false view of masculinity affected others.
  • “Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down, he was afraid of being thought weak.”
  • This demonstrates the fear of Nwoye being weak and not like Okonkwo, this brings out his fallacious views of masculinity and delusional thoughts of Nwoye not being his son.
  • Okonkwo was so ashamed of his son that his mind created thoughts about Nwoye not being his own biological son.
  • The machete that Okonkwo used to help murder his adopted son Ikemefuna shows how the fear of him looking weak affects him and others.
  • This shows how Okonkwo does not want to be seen as weak so bad that he would have a hand in killing his own son.
