  • Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army.
  • Irvin McDowell (Union) 30.000
  • The 1st battle of Bull Run started on July 16, 1861.
  • Union troops marched from Washington to attack the Confederates at Bull Run
  • Beauregard (Confederacy) 22,000
  • This was the first major land battle in Virginia.
  • On the 21st, McDowell decided to attack and at first the Union looked to have the upper hand because the pushed the South back to Henry Hill
  • The Union marched toward Henry Hill and then attacked the Confederates at a river crossing called Bull Run
  • The Confederacy received reinforcements. With the help of people like Stonewall Jackson, the South had a strong counterattack and pushed back the Union
  • Henry Hill
  • The Confederacy then took over the Unions artillery
  • When the Union retreated their remaining artillery blocked a lot of the paths
  • Retreat!!
  • When the Union retreated it was total chaos. They threw they weapons and supplies down and panicked and ran. The generals had no control of the retreat.
  • Union: 460 Deaths, 1,124 Wounded, 1,312 Captured or Missing
  • Confederacy: 387 Deaths, 1,582 Wounded, 13 Missing
