Montag questions his happiness after Clarisse talks to him
On page 10, Montag is talking with Clarisse and before she walks into her house, she askes Montag the question "Are you happy?" This makes Montag question his role in society and why he belongs their. This then makes him wonder if his love for Mildred is fake. Bradbury used this conversation to show that people in dystopias may not always be happy in their societies.
"Are you happy?" pg. 10
Government Control represented by the Hound
On pages 25 and 26, Montag is observing the hound and when he touches its muzzle, he extends it's needle to threaten Montag which scares Montag. Bradbury used the hound in the book to represent oppressive government control. This helps to make a better dystopian world in the book by having a government that doesn't allow you to do certain things.
“He saw the silver needle extend upon the air an inch, pull back, extend, pull back. The growl simmered in the beast and it looked at him.” pg. 25-26
