  • Liesel has to hide a huge secret that if found out, could in return get her and her family killed. If Liesel tells anyone, the Nazi's will first come and take the Jew, Max, punish him, and then put him in a camp. After that, the Nazi's will come and punish the Hubermann's.
  • Climax
  • In celebration of the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler's birthday, the Nazi's create a huge fire and throw books, paper, and anything else they can find to throw in. After the huge crowd leaves the fire, Liesel comes back to steal her second book. Afterward, her best friend asks her how it feels to steal a book. She replies with, "It feels good, doesn't it? To steal something back."
  • Falling Action
  • In the middle of the night, Max Vandenburg; a Jew comes to the door of Rosa and Hans Hubermann and asks for a place to stay. Max gets to live in the basement on an old mattress with some sheets. Liesel and Max become very close friends become inseparable.
  • Resolution
  • One night, Liesel decides to go downstairs and write about her life. "She was saying goodbye and she didn't even know it" That very same night, the raid sirens went off too late. Himmel Street was bombed and everyone but Liesel was killed. Liesel was shocked and couldn't even bear to look at her Papa. She thanked Ilsa Hermann for her life and tried to deal with the pain of her loss.
  • A few days after the bombing, there was a huge funeral for all of the lives that were lost on that tragic day on Himmel Street. Liesel went to the funeral with the mayor and his wife. She has to watch her father, mother, and best friend get buried. She is devastated and has a hard time holding herself together.
  • A few years after the bombing, Liesel is working when she is reunited with Max. "They hugged and cried and fell to the floor." They are so happy to see each other and promise to never lose each other again.
