  • Mrs. Buell does not appear to like kids. But one day, she helps the main character, a little girl named Kate, with a scraped knee. She is surprisingly gentle and kind. Kate felt guilty for not smiling back at her when she had finished fixing her scraped knee.

  • One day, Kate sees that Mrs. Buell had died from a heart attack. She goes to the store and sees Mrs. Buell's daughter and her husband cleaning the store and overhears them talking about Mrs. Buell.

  • Kate notices that they did not seem to have a good relationship.
  • Kate realizes everything will never be the same. She knows now that people will pass away and at some point in her life she will too. everything she has ever taken for granted is not guaranteed to always be there.
