Storyboard Text

  • Pass! We Love basketball, and Mr. Betts!
  • Inner Thought: Be proactive. George and John have had issues before, there could be a potential problem. I need to occupy space and move around, making my presence known around the gym today.
  • This is what happens when you don't catch my pass! You stink!
  • Inner thought: Betts, stay calm and de-escalate! Use simple language, simple and brief sentences. Give him space, separate the two, send the other students to the other half of the gym.
  • Mr. Betts, Jake is the worst basketball player. I know I shouldn't have pushed him down, I lost control.  I agree that I could have handled it differently.
  • George, I want to hear your side, what you think happened, what you are feeling. Do you agree that you could have handled the situation better? Let's talk this through.
  • George, thank you for your honesty. I understand your frustration, but in this class you need to find different ways to handle that frustration. As a direct consequence, I am going to have you sit out for the remainder of this activity and before the next starts to debrief with John, so hopefully this does not happen again.
