Storyboard Text

  • Hey, can you help me define what is personality disorder?
  • Okay, relax. We were taught in class that personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving.
  • I will not do well on this exam. I do not know anything about personality disorder. HELP ME PLEASE!
  •  Good, now that it’s coming back to you, there are several symptoms in which it this disorder can be identified.
  • Oh yes! Personality disorder is usually manifested through someone’s genetics and environmental factors.
  • So then the signs and symptoms would be tendency to hold grudges, recurring problems with the law, impulsive behavior and the list goes on...
  •   Yes. You guys are on the right track. Do you guys remember what unit 9 said about the disorders that criminals are likely to display?
  • That they are impulsive and have negative emotions?
  • I did not read unit 9.
  • I remember this. National Offender Management Service (NOMS) (2011) also said that there is limited success to the treatment of personality disorder offenders. (NOMS, 2011, p ii)
  • And you said you did not read the unit.
  • What article?
  • There was an article which spoke about personality disorders in Jamaican prisoners. Hickling and someone else.
  • Hickling and Walcott? Their study found that violence is a sign of having a mental health problem. It identified 4 very important points.
  • What were the other points?
