Storyboard Description

Policeman of the Western Hemisphere (Roosevelt Corollary and the Panama Canal)

Storyboard Text

  •
  • I think the country should take power in Panama. Building a canal there could put us at the top of the financial food chain in the world.
  • Roosevelt Corollary
  • "Panama Canal"
  • On December 6th, 1904, Roosevelt added a corollary to the Monroe Doctrine to pledge to defend countries in the Western Hemisphere and threaten foreign powers who tried to interfere with the States' interests
  • "Chronic wrongdoing... may force the United States... to the exercise of an international police power"
  • I'm ordering our Navy to intervene in the Revolution down in Panama. Free them from Colombian Rule then begin work on the Canal
  • Understood
  • But will we be better off?
  • The United States of America has freed you from Colombian Rule. You are now protected by  us and you will follow our laws
  • With this deal, the United States gains control of the Canal Zone for $10 million.
  • The construction of the Canal results in the exploitation of Panamanian Citizens for cheap labor. They also become subject to Jim Crow type laws
  • You'll also be allowed to enforce your laws on us as you please
  • WHAT ABOUT US?! We Panamanian Citizens had no say in this matter, and we're not okay with that at all
  • Some skirmishes would follow, resulting in the deaths of some Panamanian citizens. However, the Canal results in the United States greatly expanding their financial influence in the Western Hemisphere (and the world)
