Harold Godwinson received news that Harald Hardrada had invaded north and on a battle at Fulford.
Harold Godwinson quickly marched north, gathering all the men he could. Whilst marching north, Harold Godwinson was able to catch Harold Hardrada by surprise and killing him at the battle of Stanford(25 September 1066).
Harold Godwinson heard that William Duke of Normandy was about to invade Britain so he told his army to march south and eventually they met at the battle of Hastings on 14th October 1066.
Harold Godwinsons men formed a large circle on top of Senlac Hill making a shield wall to protect themselves . Williams archers fired arrows at them but these just hit the shields.
As Williams army did not seem to be attacking very well so he thought of a very cunning plan . Some of Williams army would march and try to attack whilst the other part of the army would run away. At that point ( hopefully) there would be messages going round that Williams army would have been demolished.
In the end this plan successfully worked. Harold Godwinson died from a bow and arrow in his eye and then William duke of Normandy was crowned King of England.
