- Jonas has been chosen for the special assignment of reciever of memory
- If a reciever leaves the community the memories are shared with everyone else
- If I leave then everyone will turn to the elders and you for help
- This is at the ceremony of twelve where Jonas is recognized for his special assignment of receiver of memory. This is a huge honor because there is only one perfect candidate selected.
- Jonas begins to realize that the community is very controlled. In this scene Jonas is receiving the first memory that is on the sled where he experiences snow, hills, sleds, and runners. This is significant because Jonas has never heard of any of these things this sets up where Jonas will learn things are wrong in the community. The giver and Jonas are the only ones who know about any of this. The elders don't let the receivers have much company because they don't want word of reality to get out.
