Dan Harris begins working for local new outlets as a young man, and joins ABC News in 2000 as part of a promotion. He then traveled the world to report after 9/11, even in war zones. He alternated from Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and Iraq and lived in New York when he was not on the job.
When Dan is finished with traveling to war zones, he feels that a part of himself is missing. He missed the thrill and danger of being in the war zone. He then decided to try cocaine with a colleague , which soon sparks an addiction and his party scene. The use of drugs was most likely his filler for the thrill of the war zones he was no longer experiencing.

Dan seeks counseling and comes to terms that substance abuse was the main factor in his on air meltdown. He realizes he needs to leave the party scene behind if he desires success in his career. He is confused with his thoughts and tries to cope with his addiction.
Dan meets his future wife, Bianca and finally starts living with someone else. This helps him cope and realize what i most important to him. Soon they get married and take a nice honeymoon, which is great for Dan's recovery.
Dan discovers a book that was recommended by his colleague which explains how meditation can increase happiness. He even goes on a 10 day meditation retreat and gets very serious about the benefits of meditation. This helps him overcome his addiction and his ego when it came to the way he thought about his life and his career.
