Storyboard Text

  • Why do we have to go to school?
  • Edward Jenner was born on 17 May 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, as the eighth of nine children. His father, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, was the vicar of Berkeley, so Jenner received a strong basic education.
  • He went to school in Wotton-under-Edge at Katherine Lady Berkeley's School and in Cirencester.[8] During this time, he was inoculatedfor smallpox, which had a lifelong effect upon his general health.
  • I have found a way to cure small pox ..............................................................................................kind regards Edward Jenner
  • Smallpox has swept through Gloucestershire and during this time Jenner discovered that his patients who are farmers or often work with cattle often have a milder disease than smallpox called cowpox.
  • You saved livesTHANK YOU
  • Edward Jenner did an experiment on one of his patients, an eight year old boy named James Phipps. Jenner inserted pus taken from cow and inserted into an incision into the boy's arm. Boy had a normal reaction, a slight fever, then full health. "Jenner subsequently proved that having been inoculated with cowpox Phipps was immune to smallpox."
  • Jenner submitted his experiment and what he found out to the Royal Society, but it was turned down because the idea was too revolutionary.
  • Jenner was widely supported but also criticized because his idea was too repulsive, and a lot of people does not believe diseased animal can inoculate human from smallpox. But soon, people see the protection that the vaccination provides, it got popular and widespread, Jenner became famous.
