  • Bruno is very small for his age. 
  • Bruno is a very sensitive boy.
  • "Men like Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci... in Bruno's mind he wanted to be like them when he grew up."

  • Bruno is upset about leaving Berlin.
  • Gretel
  • Gretel is known as "The Hopeless Case".
  • Gretel is very immature.

  • Gretel is very rude.

  • Father
  • “Father was now to be addressed as ‘commandant’ by Maria, Cook, and Lars the butler, as well as by all the soldiers who came in and out of there.”
  • Bruno is around the age of ten years old. He is a very curious boy so he loves going on adventures and exploring his houses and his surroundings. He is the main character in the book and ever since his parents told him he was moving to Out-With he has been very upset and is trying to convince his parents to move back to Berlin where all of his friends and family are.
  • Maria
  • “ You mustn't say that, she said. You must never say something like that about your Father. Said Maria”
  • Gretel is about twelve years old, almost thirteen years old. She asks very immature for her age though. She still plays with dolls even though she is basically a teenager. She is one of the minor characters, and is also Bruno’s terrible sister. He calls her “The Hopeless Case” because she is really rude to him. She also doesn’t like the new house which is funny because Bruno and Gretel never usually get along very well, and have similar ideas.
  • Shmuel
  • “I don’t think you realize just how many people live on this side of the fence, said Shmuel. There are thousands of us.”
  • Shmuel is friends with Bruno.
  • Father is a very strict man. He is also not a great father to Gretel and Bruno. His role in this book is he is Gretel and Bruno’s father, and he is the commandant in the German Army. He was the cause of moving to Out-With. He is also not very understanding of Bruno’s feelings.
  • Lieutenant Kotler
  • Father is strict.

  • “What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Lieutenant Kotler grew very angry with Pavel and no one…”

  • Maria is their families maid. She has been working for their family for a long time. She is a little older, and has one of the key characters in the book. She is very loyal to Father(commandant) because he has given her a job for a long time and when father was a little boy his parents provided a job for her mother, and is very loyal. She is also very timid when it comes to powerful people.

  • Shmuel is a Jewish a Jewish boy who lives on the other side of the fence. He is Bruno’s only friend at Out-With. He is a very skinny boy with very pale skin. He is tired all of the time because he doesn’t get enough sleep, and nutrients to support his body, so he is usually restless.
  • Shmuel is always upset.
  • Shmuel lives on the other side of the fence.
  • Lieutenant Kotler is a very young man around the age of 18 years, and works for the “Commandant”. He is a very put together man that is not very nice. He is kind of nice to Gretel, but not at all nice to Bruno. He jokes around with Bruno making him seem dumb.
