Odysseus and his men set off on their boat in hopes to reach Ithaca. However before they were able to reach Ithaca their ship was struck by a hurricane which destroyed the ship and caused them to have to take a break. The men came across the lotus eaters whom helped them. "From the sky and the ships went plunging headlong on, our sails slashed to rags by the hurricane's blast! (IX 79-80)"
After the Lotus eaters helped them fix their ship Odysseus was ready to set off back to sea. However his shipmates were comfortable where they were and Odysseus finally talked some sense into them and they were on their way. "But i brought them back, back to the hollow ships, and streaming tears---I forced them fast. (IX 110-112)"
After sailing for a little while Odysseus' ship reached the land of the Cyclops. "From there we sailed on, our spirits now at a low ebb, and reached the land of the high and mighty cyclops. (IX 118-119)"
The Cyclops being the scary creature he is ate many of Odysseus' men. This infuriated Odysseus. "Here Cyclops, try this wine--to top off the banquet of human flesh you've botled down! (IX 388-389)
Recgonizing the fact the Odysseus' was upset the other men tried to convince Odysseus to let go and get back onto the boat so they could all leave.
However the men could not hold Odysseus back and he went back onto the island and burnt the Cyclops' thighs. "I slaughtered him on the beach and burnt his thighs to Cronus' mighty son. (IX 614-615)
